18th ANNUAL LESLLA SYMPOSIUM

Focus on the Future: Surprises, Opportunities, and Collaborations

Pre-Symposium Site Visit

October 19, 2022

Learn about Tucson's LESLLA context, connect with colleagues, and enjoy a delicious lunch.  Site visit participants will visit two organizations serving LESLLA learners in Tucson. Cost: $40

Pima Community College’s Refugee Education Program (REP):  Pima County receives over 1000 refugees each year. REP offers free classes for federally-designated refugees for up to five years after arrival. Newly arrived refugees have English skills from early-emergent literacy through advanced. The program is funded by the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program. Learn more here.

At REP, site visit participants will learn about program offerings, tour the campus, and interact with students.

Literacy Connects:  Literacy Connects’ five literacy and creative expression programs serve learners of all age levels.  The English Language Acquisition for Adults program offers free English classes for adult immigrants and refugees in Tucson and southern Arizona.  Learn more here.

At Literacy Connects, participants will tour the campus, including the Literacy Garden (a collaboration with the International Rescue Committee), learn about Literacy Connects program offerings, and enjoy a delicious lunch provided by a local restaurant.

Can I still attend the virtual symposium if I do Site Visit?

All registrants will have access to recorded virtual symposium sessions (including keynote and presentations) asynchronously, so even if you choose the site visit, you will still be able to access virtual symposium recordings at your convenience.
